I’m an actor and I’m a trainer. It probably is a good mix from a geographical standpoint: I can adjust my schedule so that I can go to auditions etc. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a little rough keeping both hemispheres of my brain this acute.
Example: On Wednesday I worked on set until midnight, got home and had to work an audition for 9:30 AM, woke up at 5 AM to train two clients before the audition.
When I’m training people it’s about weights and measures. I build periodized programs that combine principles of exercise physiology with loading volumes specific to each client. It requires detailed attention to physiology and lots of research daily. It requires constant upgrading of knowledge.
The audition asks something very different. It asks that you live a story. Plain and simple, but simple is never easy. Performing simply has proven to be one of the greatest challenges of my life. I am constantly put up against myself in this regard.
If you train with me, you know that I don’t know my right from my left and I can’t count. These are valuable skills for a personal trainer to have. I’m sure it has at some point affected me negatively but at the end of the day I love both of my jobs. My Clients quickly learn to do what I mean, not what I say.
There’s some beauty in the world and it ain’t in a gym. It’s in language and communication, it’s in relationships.
When we go to the gym we go to improve our instrument that carries us into our relationships. We build the body that conveys the language both spoken and unspoken. The way you stand, the way you speak, these things say something very specific about you. So, from this point of view these two careers perfectly complement one another.
Sometimes I think I’d be a lot further along if I just committed to one,. However, I think I would just missed the other too much.
I want to thank you for reading this! I’d love to have you come in and we’ll talk about your body as an instrument for all of your communication, relationships, and beauty. But you are already beautiful.
